Mangaluru regional DGCEI digs tax evasion of Rs 76 crore

Mangaluru, Apr 14, 2017: Reports state that  Mangaluru regional unit of DGCEI, Directorate General of Central Excise Intelligence, apex intelligence agency under Central Board of Excise and Customs, has performed well during the last fiscal.


tax.jThe regional unit that started just two years back has detected central excise and service tax evasion cases to the tune of more than Rs 76 crore during 2016-17 and recovered more than Rs 50 crore, an increase of more than 300% compared to the previous year.

The percentage of recovery of central excise duty and service tax in relation to detection is more than 65% which is one of the highest in the country. The evaders had adopted various methods to evade payment of tax. However, on detection, the assesses have come forward and paid all the dues, B Sumidaa Devi, additional director, DGCEI, said. During the fiscal gone by, the unit detected 14 central excise duty evasion cases involving an estimated amount of Rs 26.23 crore.


Out of this estimated amount, Rs 6.47 crore was realized. In respect of evasion of service tax, this regional unit has detected 71 cases involving an amount of Rs 50.63 crore and recovered an amount of Rs 43.57 crore. The unit has detected many high profile cases and during this period 117 defaulters have come forward to pay service tax and central excise duty. The high compliance level among the defaulters is due to awareness campaign carried out by this unit.

The unit was able to get information from public on duty defaulters. DGCEI once again appeals to people to come forward and report any instances of service tax/central excise duty evasion. Informers who provide credible information resulting in detection of duty evasion will be suitably rewarded up to 20% of duty evaded as per government guidelines from time to time.
