Mangaluru ranked 63rd in cleanliness, Udupi 143

Mangaluru, May 05, 2017: Cleanliness only in real terms no longer matters as much as  projecting it online. Mangaluru or Namma Kudla learns this lesson the hard way with its ’netizens’ not logging on to the Swachh Survekshan Survey carried out by Ministry of Urban Development.

As a result, Mangaluru is ranked 63rd cleanest city in India and second cleanest in Karnataka after Mysuru in the latest rankings on May 4, Thursday.  Note Mysuru was number 1 and Mangaluru 3 in the last all India rankings.


Major components of the survey totalling 2000 marks saw 900 marks allotted for documentation, 500 for direct observation and 600 for public opinion/participation. Mangaluru totalled 1350 marks (Mysuru 1743) securing 713 for documentation, 307 for direct observation and 330 for public participation. Indore adjudged the cleanest Indian city on the other hand clocked 1808 marks. Udupi the third cleanest city in Karnataka logged 1123 points to be ranked 143. A Mangaluru City Corporation official lamented lack of public participation in the survey. "For a population of nearly 5-lakh, only 1,544 logged on to MoUD portal to leave their feedback on the Swachh Survekshan. Lack of enthusiasm shown to download Swachhata App to log in complaints on civic issues, to become Swachchagrahis and spearhead campaign against open defecation has taken away a big chunk of marks in public participation parameter," the official said.


Pointing to another major reason for city’s drop in rankings, the officials said, there was no field survey or collection of public opinion when the survey was carried out last year. Moreover, the coastal city was rated on documentation based score where it was just 0.35% adrift of Mysuru, which topped the ranking for cities with population more than 10 lakh. "We made it to the top three purely on the basis on the documentation score," the official added.

 India’s growing and coastal city, Mangaluru, managed to secure the 63rd rank in the latest list of cleanest cities of the country as released by the Ministry of Union Urban Development.  As per the data released for the current year based on the findings of ’Swachh Survekshan-2017,’ Mysuru lost its top spot and moved down to the fifth position in the national level rankings.  Meanwhile, Mangaluru and Udupi have been declared the second and third cleanest cities respectively in Karnataka after Mysuru.
