Mangaluru police efforts to rehabilitate youth with substance abuse

Mangaluru, May 01, 2016: Mangaluru city police launched a vital mission to rehabilitate city youth  with problems of substance abuse in a bid to reduce crimes in the city.

The mission has identified around 40  young boys and girls addicted to ganja, psychotic drugs and alcohol. All these youth aged between 16 to 20 years, the police said. Some of these  youth are given daily counselling. Some of them get treatment at de-addiction centres. "Most of them are habitual offenders and unemployed. When they don’t have money to buy drugs, they look for criminal ways to earn it. So it is essential to introduce early intervention by providing them de-addiction and transforming them into good people, ," said M Chandra Sekhar, city police commissioner and the man behind the initiative.


identifying problem youth  will be taken up at every police stations under Mangaluru Commissionerate seriously. "If we manage to bring them to the mainstream as transformed persons, there will be less crimes in the city."

A fisherman was recently murdered allegedly by youth under the influence of ganja at Mogaveera Patna under Ullal police station limits. Chandra Sekhar said that it was revealed during the investigation that fisherman Rajesh Kotian, 43, became a soft target for these youth who were in an inebriated state during the time of crime. "When a person takes such drugs, logical reasoning stops functioning and they get into illegal activities," he added.

Apart from it, police are also keeping an eye on drug mafia that is thriving in the city. According to the top cop, the major supply of ganja comes from Kerala, Chikkamagaluru and Shivamogga disticts. Even chemist shops too have come under police radar for alleged sale of psychotropic substances and they have been warned.
