Mangaluru origin nurse forced into slavery in Saudi Arabia, Sushma Swaraj to the rescue

Mangaluru, June 25, 2017: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Saturday asked the Indian envoy in Saudi Arabia to help Jacintha Mendonca, a nurse from Mangaluru who has reportedly been pushed into slavery in the Gulf country.

Jacintha Mendonca worked as a nurse for a hospital in Mangaluru. An illegal agent named James offered her a job as a nurse in Qatar. Thereby, fooled her,trafficked her and then forced in to slavery. She was trafficked an year ago.

As per media reports, the kaafil, who have enslaved her is demanding 5 lakh rupees for letting her go. This is the amount he paid to those illegal agents. However, with Sushma Swaraj’s intervention the hopes of her freedom have increased.

Jacintha’s three children Velita, Vinroy and Binitha, spoke to their mother a month ago. "Our last conversation was unimaginable. When she was speaking on the phone, someone came from behind and started beating her, and she dropped the phone with a loud cry. She was also coughing (blood) and mentioned that she had high fever," recalls Velita.

They live near Pernal in Karkala taluk, where Vinroy and Binitha go to college. Her father, Vincent Mendonca, died due to tuberculosis, and her sister recently recovered from it.
