Mangaluru full lockdown: Roads wear deserted look, people avoid stepping out unnecessarily

Mangaluru, July 5, 2020: Roads in Mangaluru and its suburbs wore a deserted look and shops remained closed due to total lockdown reimposed on Sunday in the state to contain the rising number of coronavirus cases.

Roads remained traffic free. Except milk supply, hospitals, pharmacies, ambulance services, emergency and no other activities are are permitted. Private vehicles are allowed only for emergency medical needs.

All roads, markets, bus stands in the city wore a deserted look. Police have been deployed in seeral areas in Mangaluru to ensure that citizens do not violate the lockdown. The busy city roads at Pumpwell, Ambedkar Circle, Hampankatta wore a deserted look. KSRTC and private buses, autorickshaws, taxis remained off the road. Even in the interiors, hardly a few vehicles were seen on the road.

Owing to the lockdown, no Sunday prayers were held in churches coming under Mangalore diocese. Even Kukke Subramanya Temple too remained closed for devotees.

In Udupi also, normal life was paralysed with the total lockdown. Only shops selling essential goods were open, while buses and private vehicles kept off the roads.

Hit by a spike in Covid-19 cases, Karnataka announced a dusk-to-dawn curfew starting from July 5. The curbs will remain in place till at least August 2, unless the authorities decide to call it off earlier or extend it.
