Mangaluru desalination unit plans to be revived

Mangaluru, July 10, 2018: Urban Development Minister and DK in-charge,  U T Khader said the state government will decide on implementing desalination project  after studying the feasibility report of the project.


U T Khader.jSpeaking at a meeting, he said the state government had proposed a desalination unit in Mangaluru to find a permanent solution to the drinking water woes in the coastal district. The unit will help in supplying water to industries in the region, he added.

After studying the feasibility report on desalination unit, the state government will take a final call on the same. In case it is not suitable, the government may think about dropping the project, Khader said.

“A possibility of setting up a 50 MLD desalination unit on PPP mode will be looked into,” he said and directed the officials to submit a detailed report on the project by including details on project cost, maintenance, cost of water and so on.

Meanwhile, the minister expressed displeasure at the KIADB for failing to provide basic facilities to industrial areas in the district.

Several industrialists are not keen on setting up industries in the district owing to lack of infrastructure facilities. The KIADB has failed to provide proper road and electricity to the industrial area. In spite of available land at Ira industrial area, the KIADB has failed to provide basic facilities, he added.

Ullal UGD  :  The minister said that the work on UGD in Ullal CMC limits should be started at the earliest.

A sum of Rs 2.80 crore is required for land acquisition for the UGD works. The government has already released Rs 1.44 crore. The land acquisition process should be completed at the earliest, he added.
