Mangaluru: ZP takes steps for a cleaner DK

Mangaluru, July 11, 2015:   Addressing a special meet  convened at Nethravathi Hall of Zilla Panchayat July 10,  Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer P I Sreevidya sated that  in order to bring cleanliness and an aesthetic environment in  Dakshina Kannada district, workshops will be conducted on waste management for Gram Panchayat elected representatives and Panchayat Development Officers in taluk-level.

The authorities would start imposing fines for poor waste management.  She said the Zilla Panchayat is trying to implement decentralised waste management in village-level. Teachers, students and Sthree Shakthi group members would be trained.  NSS students of Mangalore University would also cooperate in the process.  For the waste dumping yards in every village or one for three to four villages, a letter has been written to the revenue department to sanction land.  

BJP Member Santhosh Kumar Rai said the efforts of health officers would go in vain if the waste is not properly managed in Ullal City Municipal Corporation. Action should be taken against the Panchayat Development Officers if the Gram Panchayats fail in waste management. The work on liquid waste management treatment plant at Kurnad should be improved.

Chicken waste :   Mamata Gatti expressed concern that chicken waste is being thrown into drinking water sources in many parts of Bantwal taluk including Deralakatte and Kanachur.   The ZP should take action to install CCTV cameras in certain areas to identify the culprits.   The police department should join hands with the department of health in this regard. The waste dumping yards should be provided in each village, especially for shopkeepers and hoteliers.  About five people have been affected by Dengue in Kairangala region and  fogging has not been done in the area.  She also wanted the government to distribute napkin burners to the schools.

Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan District Coordinator Manjula G presented a project prepared for cleanse DK district under the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan. The presentation focused on the role of Gram Panchayat in management of waste, both degradable and non-degradable. 

Degradable waste can be used as compost using wastage pits, pipe compost, bio gas, vermicompost and other methods.   The proposals included keeping water and hygiene committees of the villages creative, collecting wet waste everyday and dry waste once in a week, earmarking one acre land in every village for waste management, making it mandatory to obtain no objection certificate on cleanliness from the GP to conduct public programmes, banning of less that 40 micron weight plastic cover etc. The Zilla Panchayat passed a  Rs 2.66 crore action plan for various development works using ZP Development Fund 2015-16. .

Rememberence : The Zilla Panchayat paid tribute to Congress member Yashavanti Alva, who died due to cardiac arrest recently. Zilla Panchayat President Asha Timmappa Gowda and CEO P I Sreevidya both explained the motherly character of Yashavanti Alva who used to guide others with her three decades of experience.  The CEO said that Yashavanti Alva called twice to her and emotionally expressed her eagerness to participate in the ZP meeting. She used to request to forgive others if they commit small  mistakes.   M S Mohammed said that Alva used to solve serious issues cleverly. She respected others and got respect from others without party barriers. Zilla Panchayat expressed condolences for the death of Meenakshi, an official who worked at Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA).
