Mangaluru: Youth Congress to hold protest against Moral Policing

Mangaluru: September 17, 2015: To sensitize Kudla residents not to take law into their own hands, city Youth Congress wing will hold a peace march during the last week of September.

 

However, the saffron party BJP leaders have asked not to organize such a march for ’political gains’. The march was earlier scheduled on September 25, but was postponed as it comes after Bakrid, stated Mithun Rai, president, District Youth Congress. Explaining the motive behind the march, which is aiming to gather thousands of youths from the city, Rai said that whenever there are incidents of moral policing, people involved take law into their own hands and beat up the youths without being aware of the consequences. The march will focus on educating Mangalureans to report such incidents to the authorities concerned.

The district has seven MLAs elected from the Congress, and some hold portfolios in the state government. However, not much has been done to curb it even after coming to power two years ago.

Rai said that the MLAs are doing their best to curb such incidents. Citing the example of the recent vigilante attack in Attavar, he said police managed to arrest culprits, but they reached the spot late by an hour.

Rai said that some of the saffron and extremists outfits are adding more fuel to such incidents.

The march will also serve as a warning to them. "Most of those who were arrested in the vigilante attacks are youths from poor background, and some of them are the sole bread winners. Once they are jailed, their families suffer," he said.

Meanwhile, responding to the Congress’ march, Pratapsimha Nayak, district BJP president said it’s good to hear that the Congress has woken up and wants to educate people. "But let it not be for political gains. We appreciate the march if it does good to the society," he said.
