Mangaluru, June 12, 2016 : World Day against Child Labour was observed in the city on June 12, Sunday under the auspices of Dakshina Kannada district administration and various other departments.
DK District in-charge Minister B Ramanatha Rai who inaugurated the function said there was an urgent need to end the menace of child labour and stressed the need for awareness in this regard. He said proper education to children is the only way to eradicate this menace.
He also spoke about the several measures taken by the administration in making Dakshina Kannada free from child labour.
Children of Snehalaya Rehabilitation Centre received free bags on the occasion. Two orphan children who presently reside in Snehalaya narrated their past experience as child labourers and also how education has brought about a change in their lives.
Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim, ZP CEO P I Shreevidya, DCP Shantharaju, Hilda Rayappan of Prajna Counselling Centre, MLC Ivan D’Souza, Dakshina Kannada ZP President Meenakshi Shanthigodu, Kripa Alva, Chairperson of Karnataka State Child Rights Commission and others were present.
A rally was also taken out from Hampankatta Circle to Town Hall to mark the occasion.
