Mangaluru, May 31, 2015: World Anti Tobacco Day with the slogan “Stop Illicit Trade of Tobacco Products” was observed at the Mangaluru Police Commissioner’s Office here on May 31, Sunday under the joint aegis of the District Legal Service Authority, District Administration, Zilla Panchayat, District Health and Family Welfare Department, District Police Department, Lawyers Guild, Mangaluru City Corporation and Wenlock Hospital. MG Uma, Chief District Magistrate inaugurated the programme.
In her address, Uma exhorted the younger generation to keep away from smoking as it not only kills one but also does harm to those who are around a smoker.
Rama Krishna Rao, District Health Officer who also spoke on the occasion informed that tobacco was responsible for nearly 5.4 million deaths every year including 1 million deaths in India. He also stated that 40 per cent of cancer cases in men are due to Tobacco and many of those suffering from heart disease and die at a young age below 40 are also smokers. There is a need to dissuade people from smoking through counselling and motivation, he added.
Deputy Commissioner AB Ibrahim urged youth organisations to hold awareness programmes against use of Tobacco.
Dr Sharanappa, SP, also spoke on the occasion. Uday Nayak, ACP (Traffic) and many others were present.
Earlier, a procession was taken out from Wenlock Hospital to the programme venue.
