Mangaluru: Why this so called ’park’ on Jail Road

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, Oct 05, 2015: It is prominently reported in the press,  local ministers and officials say creating good parks for children and elders in the ’smart city’ is a priority.   Many old parks in bad condition in the city can be observed.  Many a time they are grossly misused and both citizens and officials are afraid to tackle the issue.

The case in point is a small park came up on Jail Road, opposite Jail Quarters/Veterinary Quarters and adjacent to ’Pawan Apartments,’ with the efforts of citizens and Lions Ladies Club, decades ago, for the welfare of children.

For several years now, children have hardly set their foot on this park. The residents are apprehensive about sending their wards to the park to play.  It is still a park albeit a neglected piece of fenced land with overgrown unkempt vegetation, dilapidated play facilities and a haven for street dogs. But most of the time it is a den of anti-social elements and activities and a general eye sore.

As a matter of fact, Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) was suppose to maintain the park with other social bodies pitching in when needed.

I J S Shet, a citizen activist, said that if the park cannot be useful for children under the circumstances, it was the duty of the MCC and other authorities concerned to see to it that the space was put to use in a proper and a legal manner, without any danger or disturbance to the residents, in the area.

"The park can be done away with if it cannot be sustained and the space profitably used by the government," he added.
