Mangaluru Aug 12, 2016 : A large number of devotees gathered at Urva Sri Marigudi Temple in Mangaluru on August 12, Friday to celebrate Varamahalaxmi Pooja. Usually it comes on Friday that falls just before the full moon day of Shravana month according to Hindu calendar every year.
On this day Goddess Mahalakshmi is worshipped for healthy progeny in addition to good health and prosperity of husband, by married women. This is an opportunity to invoke blessings of the Goddess Mahalaxmi, as it is believed that she happens to be at her benevolent best on this day.
Community puja is also organized at halls and temples to help women to come together and exchange good wishes and offerings. On this festival, delicacies like Obbattu, Huliyanna, Payasam etc are made by people. Women usually visit their neighbours and relatives to exchange sweets, flowers, and Prasadam. This custom is celebrated by Hindus in all places in Karnataka.
