Mangaluru: Supplementry exam norms at MU rationalised

Mangaluru, June 19, 2015: Mangalore University, through an amendment, has given approval at its academic council meeting, to conduct supplementary examinations of even semesters during exams of odd semesters and vice versa.  This was not existent earlier and uncleared papers of odd semesters were to be attempted only during exams of odd semesters and so on. This forced students (who could not clear all papers), especially from sixth semester had to face great deal of inconvenience. But with the amendment, the students will be relieved.   The decision was taken at the University Academic council meeting held at the new senate hall in the administrative block at Mangalore University June 18.

 Also, re-examinations will be conducted for those who fail in sixth semester, within three months of the completion of the regular examination. This will be applicable to all degree level semester exams. Also an order by Department of PU Education regarding eligibility of private candidates who write second PU board examinations privately, will be considered equivalent to that of regular candidates, was presented at the academic council meeting. The order has been circulated to all degree colleges affiliated to the university, so as to be effective for the new admissions in degree colleges.

VC K Byrappa said two proposals to amend the statute governing establishment of fellowships, scholarships, gold medals in Mangalore University and statute relating to the institution of Jainakavi Rathnakaravarni Adhyayana Pitha in MU, are approved by the Chancellor.

An ordinance governing disciplinary control over examiners and staff involved in examination work of Mangalore University was approved at the academic council meet. The ordinance will be placed before the syndicate and will be submitted to the govt.   The VC said that by this, the university will be able to have an ordinance of its own.

The syllabus of a four-month duration course in tourism was also approved at the meet. In the State, Bengaluru University, Mysore University, Mangaluru University, VTU, Belagavi and Rani Channamma University, Belagavi are introducing the course. The tourism department has released Rs 9 lakh to each university in this regard. Approval was given towards autonomous status to new courses, initiation of new colleges and addition of seats. Approval was also given towards the continuation of affiliation to 16 private colleges, approval towards extension of affiliation of specific courses, was given to one of the five government colleges, approval was granted for the new affiliation in two of the four applying private colleges, affiliation was denied to a private college for the addition of new section for BCom course, approval was given to a private college for autonomous status in B Vocational (Retail Management and theatre studies) and approval was given to increase the intake in three colleges.

VC K Byrappa said inter-disciplinary research and research guidance is being encouraged by the University and at present there are nine such research guides under the university. With reference to applications by BEd colleges for the increase of seats, the academic council said that as per NCTE norms, an intake of not more than 50 should be considered in each section and the total intake of students is 100. Hence, the intake will be 50-50 in two sections. Mangaluru South MLA J R Lobo suggested forming vigilance committees to inspect BEd colleges.

The amendments to regulations governing the admission to the post graduate degree and diploma programmes of Mangalore University departments, was also approved as per the new amendment, three per cent of the available seats will be reserved for physically handicapped, one per cent for the third gender, eight per cent for the students of Hyderabad - Karnataka region, one seat for wards of Kashmiri migrants, 15 per cent extra seats for other university candidates. Prof P A Rego, Registrar P S Yedapadithaya, Registrar (Evaluation) Prof B Narayana, deans of various faculties and officials were present.
