Shiradi Ghat concreting by end May-Minister Rai

Mangaluru, April 22, 2015:   As per news reports,  District-in-Charge Minister Ramanath Rai  said that concreting of Shiradi Ghat stretch covering a distance of 13.260-km connecting Heggadde, near Sakleshpur with Kempu Hole, will be completed by next month, May end.In these circumstances, vehicular movement is expected to commence on the stretch connecting  Bengaluru with Mangaluru from June 1.

 Inspecting the ongoing work sites on April 21, Tuesday, the Minister  said that more than 40 per cent of the road work is complete, at a cost of Rs 69.90 crore.

The second phase of the work,  two bidders have applied to take up the work on 13-km stretch of concrete from Kempu Hole to Addahole and 21-km of asphalt Gulagalale-Marnahalli. The technical meeting will be held at Delhi on April 25, and  will finalise the tender. The estimated cost of the work is Rs 82.28 crore.

Minister Rai indicated the road may not necessarily  be closed for the next phase of the work.  National Highways Assistant Executive Engineer said that the work on 69 culverts and four minor bridges have been completed. The work on side pitching, sign boards and crash barriers will be taken up in the month of June. As apart of the work on the stretch, pavement quality concrete (PQC), i.e, final finishing work has been laid on 1.60-km stretch.

The PQC laid only during night, as it requires temperature of 30 degree celsius, in day time, the temperature is above 30 degree celsius. In a single day, about 800 metre PQC will be laid, which will require 27 days to complete the entire stretch. The cost of every cubic metre of PQC is Rs 10,800. For every 4.5 metre of the stretch, grooves are provided to prevent cracks on the road.  The contractor Ocean Constructions has procured slipform sensor paver at an estimated cost of Rs 6.5 crore for the road work.

The work on laying dry lane concrete has been done on 9.90-km stretch on left hand side and 9.10-km stretch on the right hand side of the road. The laying of granular sub base (GSB) has been completed on 10.843-km. While the sub grade preparation has been completed on 10.843 -km stretch of the road.

National Highway M’luru division Executive Engineer said that 6,500 loads of gravel, 3,500 loads of sand, 1.35 lakh bags of cement and 800 tonnes of steel will be utilised for the laying of the road. A batch mixing plant has been set up at Marnahalli to mix the concrete and supply to the road.

National Highway engineer said that elephant menace during night had caused fear among the workers initially. A tiger was spotted too just 30 metre away on the stretch.
Four laning works : DK DC Adoor B Ibrahim said that the work on four-laning of the stretch from Hassan to B C Road (except Shiradi stretch) will be taken up by the NHAI. The work is likely to commence from October. There was an issue related to the land in Kalladka. The decision will be taken in the interest of the people to ensure that least number of people are affected by the project.
