Mangaluru: Schools re-open today, water crises boogie kills joy of students

Mangaluru, May 29, 2019: Many schools are facing acute water crisis in DK,  among the several facing water scarcity just a few schools have come out with a problem and it has been addressed by the respective block education officers, according to officials.   As many as 20 schools each in Sullia and Moodbidri, where local body elections are scheduled May 29, today,  Wednesday, will re-open on Thursday, the official added.

Among the schools facing water scarcity in Moodbidri block include a few in the Handelu cluster where open wells have gone dry. Block Education Officer Asha M.S. said that head masters of schools have been asked to make arrangements for water with the help of members of the school development and monitoring committee (SDMC). They have been asked to take a decision on preparing mid-day meals in their schools, which is likely to be difficult.

Some schools in Devachalla, Panja and Sampaje in Sullia block have reported water problem. Sullia Block Education Officer  said that respective Panchayat Development Officers have been told to arrange for water. The roof of some schools in Ajjavara and Peralu villages, which was damaged during a brief spell of pre-monsoon showers, were temporarily repaired with the help of SDMC members, he said.

Belthangady Block Education Officer Satish P. said that 10 schools in Belthangady block have reported water scarcity and the local municipal body has been asked to arrange for water. Puttur Block Education Officer Sukanya said that five schools have reported that they can sustain water supply from their underground water source for a short period. Several government and aided schools in Mangaluru will reopen today May 29, Wednesday. Those facing water scarcity have been permitted to close in the afternoon.
