The immensely popular 1998 batch IPS officer who has recently been transferred after serving a 17 month term in the city is due to hand over charge over the coming weekend. After arriving at Mangalore in January last year, Rotary Club of Mangalore had awarded him with an honorary membership. Hence a felicitation programme had been organized for him.

Following a glowing introduction by Yatish Baikampady, Club President Venkatesh Pai presented Commissioner Chandra Sekhar with a citation, flowers and a gift hamper.

In his reply to the felicitation, the Commissioner Chandra Sekhar confessed that initially he had a lot of apprehensions about Mangalore as many colleagues had warned him that it is very difficult to win over the local people. “But within a month of coming here I realized what a great place this is. The people of this city are cultured and very understanding provided you are honest with them. People here believe in rule of law. They know what is right or wrong and they respect officers who do the right thing,” he said.

“I am leaving Mangaluru with immense gratitude as this city has given me a lot. Mangaluru has given me a great name in my state headquarters. My stint here has earned me President’s Medal which had eluded me in the past and also numerous commendation letters from superiors,” he said adding that the real credit for his achievements should go to his subordinates who supported him wholeheartedly.

Advising the public to show zero tolerance to injustice, he urged the citizens to cultivate democratic nature and intervene whenever they come across injustice being perpetrated on others. “People of Mangaluru should stand up and say what is wrong is wrong. If we tolerate bad people, they will eventually only bring us pain. History has proved it. When Hitler first began his aggression bigger powers looked the other way. They started to act only when he began to hurt them,” he said. “To be a great city, we should have great people in it. To become great people, we first need to have a great heart. I want Mangaluru to be a greater city in the future,” he added.

The meeting concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Dr. Ajay Kamath.
Dr. R. L. Kamath rendered the invocation. Secretary Prasanna Shenoy, President Elect Vasant Shenoy were also present on the dais.
