Mangaluru, Sep 23, 2015: Reports indicate that at least 50 revelers on board ’Cruise cruise & Dine’ had a narrow escape as the boat sank in the Phalguni (Gurupura) near the Old Mangaluru Port after all occupants were safely evacuated following water gushing into the old sail vessel.
The passengers were partying onboard “Cruise N Dine,” a boat that operates on the Gurupura from the Old Port. The boat had left the port at around noon. In the course of the sailing, crew of the boat observed it was taking in water through a crack in the hull. The operators switched on the motor for pumping out the water, but they found it difficult to empty the water they decided to cut short the cruise and move towards the port. As the boat reached the port, all passengers were moved out and goods and equipment was also unloaded. Around 2 p.m. the boat began sinking.
“Cruise N Dine” started operations in December 2012. The cruise, operated by Charandas V. Karkera, offered rides on the Gurupura and the Netravati. A two-hour ride in the morning was offered at Rs. 300 per person, while it was Rs. 500 for a ride in the afternoon and evening. This cruise was being hired for hosting birthday and other parties. All is well that ends well - safety is vital.
