Mangaluru, April 22, 2017 : Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadi Kendra, a central government scheme aimed at  providing generic drugs to the people at affordable prices, was formally inaugurated   at a ceremony held at the TV Raman Pai Hall here on April 22, Saturday  by Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers Ananth Kumar and Minister of State for Drinking Water and Sanitation Ramesh Jigajinagi. The function was held under the joint aegis of Mathr Bhoomi Sauhardha Sahakaari Niyamitha, Gurupur Kaikamba and Bureau of Pharma PSUs of India (BPPI), New Delhi.

Speaking on the occasion, Ananth  Kumar  said  so far  1,100 such centres have come up in the country and added that local MP Nalin Kumar was now keen to have 100 such centres in Dakshina Kannada district.

The programme aimed at providing quality medicines to the people, particularly the poor , the Minister said and even recalled that a survey had revealed that only 50 per cent of the poor in the nation had access to medicines of good quality.  He said the Jan Aushadi Kendra had  medicines for  various health ailments .

He said the government also has plans to  sell stents  in these centres for Rs 30,000 while their price ranged from Rs one lakh to Rs 2 lakh elsewhere.
Minister Ramesh Jigajinagi  said there was a need  for doctors to prescribe generic medicines instead of the branded medicines which are costly.
