Mangaluru, April 06, 2015: The new Polypropylene unit of the Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) was inaugurated on April 5, Sunday by Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan.
In his address, the minister spoke about the proposal to set up a world class skill development centre in Mangaluru with the objective of ensuring enhanced job opportunities for the youth. He said the unit will come up under the aegis of the newly set up Skill Development Ministry with the help of various departments and will be supervised by the MRPL.
Fourteen per cent of the total demand for polypropylene in India is presently being imported, he said adding the new unit set up at MRPL would help in realsing the Prime Minister’s Make in India vision.
Pradhan further stated that environment protection was on top of the government agenda and there was no compromise on the issue. All guidelines of the Pollution Control Board would be adhered to, he added.
Abhayachandra Jain, State Minister for Youth Services and Sports urged the minister to ensure that all those displaced due to MPRL got jobs on preferential basis and also to solve all environmental related issues.
Nalin Kumar Kateel, MP, Capt Ganesh Karnik, MLC, Moidin Bava, MLA, SC Kuntia, Special Secretary of Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry, DK Saraf, ONGC Chairman, H Kumar, MPRL Managing Director and others were present.
The new Polypropylene unit with a capacity of 4.40 lakh tonnes has been set up at a cost of Rs 1803 crores.
