Mangaluru : Murderer convict escapes at court

Mangaluru, Apr 23, 2015:  Akshay Kumar who was convicted for murdering a 19-year-old dalit youth in 2012, along with Santosh Poojary, Sharan Rohidas, Gautam and Ketan Kumar, by the second additional district and sessions court judge Sunil Joshi. The case was  adjourned for arguments on the sentence quantum and remanded the five in judicial custody till then.

court 2Commissioner of police Murugan S said right after the conviction, Akshay sought permission to answer nature’s call while he was under the care of a police constable from the Mangaluru Rural police station,  he gave police the slip.  A manhunt has been launched to nab Akshay. Sources said police constables escorting the five men to the court were drawn from various police stations because the force was stretched on account of the annual Sagar Kavach exercise.

Murugan has sought a report on the incident from K Tilakchandra, assistant commissioner of police, and disciplinary action is likely to be initiated against the constable based on that report.

The five men had attacked Kumara with weapons at Mullakad near Kavoor on June 15, 2012.
Kumara succumbed to injuries the next day.
