Mangaluru : Minister Sorake launches much awaited advanced solid waste management system

Mangaluru, Jan 23, 2015: The much awaited advanced solid waste collection and transportation system in Mangaluru City Corporation limits was inaugurated by State Minister for Urban Development Vinay Kumar Sorake at Karavali grounds here on January 23, Friday. This is the first such system introduced in Karnataka.
In his address, the Minister said this would be a pilot programme of the MCC during the year 2015 and hoped its successful implementation would also go a long way in checking the increasing incidences of Malaria and other vector borne diseases in the city. Stating that a sewage treatment plant is already operational in Jeppinamogaru, the minister said another plant would be operational at Suratkal very soon.
He further stated that the government would take early steps to fulfil vacancies in the Mangaluru City Corporation and also stated that it has fulfilled a longstanding demand of Mangaluru by appointing a Commissioner of IAS rank. He said he wants to see Mangaluru a better city with well co-ordinated garbage management, good drainage system and 24x7 water supply.
Giving information about the new scheme, MCC Commissioner Hephisba Rani Korlapati in her key note address said under the scheme collection of dry and wet wastes will begin immediately in some wards, while the project would be extended to the entire city in the next seven months.
The Commissioner also informed that under the system dry wastes will be collected only on Wednesdays while west wastes will be collected on six days during a week. She also sought the co-operation of everyone in the successful implementation of the same.
She also stated that the contractors will use compactors, specially designed trucks to carry 10 tonnes of compacted waste in each vehicle while 65 tippers will also be on duty to collect wastes from households.
The contractor will have 700 workers for the purpose and will be paid at the rate of Rs 3301 per tonne of wastes collected from Suratkal to Mannagudda area which are dumped at the landfill site at Vamanjoor. For the wastes collected from Derebail to Jeppinamogaru areas the contractor will get Rs 2,051 per tonne.
Mahabala Maarla, Mayor, Kavitha, Deputy Mayor, Shashidhar Hegde, former mayor, Madhu, MCC Environmental Engineer Madhu, JR Lobo, BA Moidin Bava, MLAs, Jos Jacob, Managing Director of Antony Waste Handling Cell Pvt Ltd who are the contractors, Harish Kumar, former MCC Commissioner and others were present.
