Mangaluru: Hulivesha drummers allegedly assaulted with lethal weapons

Mangaluru: September 21, 2015: Two youths were allegedly assaulted with lethal weapons in broad daylight by four miscreants near Handelu Cross. Police suspect a long-term rivalry.

Vasu Acharya and Ashok, aged 25, are residents of Idu village in Karkala. They came to the city to take part in Pili Vesha (Tiger dance troupe) three days ago. On Saturday, the duo participated in a Ganeshotsava function in Kulshekar. After the event, they slept in a tent. On Sunday morning, they were on their way home.

Upon reaching Handelu at 8.30 am, four identified persons waylaid them and attacked them with sickles and machetes, police said. Vasu and Ashok were daily wage labourers. They come to the city during the festivals to earn quick bucks by taking part in cultural programmes.

The miscreants were total strangers, the victims said. The passersby, who noticed the duo lying in a pool of blood, rushed them to Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru. After inspecting the spot, police said that they have not recovered any weapon or crucial clue from the spot. "We are looking at a rivalry motive behind the incident. This might possibly be a clash between two tiger dance groups," police said.
 
The miscreants must have followed the victims from Mangaluru, said a police officer. Among the two, Ashok suffered grave injuries on his hand and abdomen. Fortunately, he is recuperating. complaint has been registered at Moodbidri police station and investigations are on to nab the miscreants.
