Mangaluru: Helpline for women, children and elderly launched at SP Office

Mangaluru, Apr 27, 2015: District Superintendent of Police Dr Sharanappa launched a Helpline for Women, Children and Senior Citizens at his office here on April 27, Monday. The Helpline Number is 1098.

Speaking to media persons on the occasion, the SP said the Helpline launched with the active support of various government departments as well as NGOs aims at coming to the aid of women, children and  senior citizens whenever they are in distress.  He said conveyance facility is also offered to the complainants with the Helpline   in order to approach other departments.

He said calls made to the Helpline Number will be attended by the staff of NGOs between 10 am to 5.30 pm and added the Helpline  will however operate round the clock at the SP office.

On the rape cases reported in the district, the SP informed that 42 rape cases were reported in 2014 as against 26 cases in the previous year. He also informed that most cases had links with love affairs.

The SP informed that 40 male personnel and ten women constables have been recruited to the Department in the district. If nine of the newly recruited lady constables were locals, of the male personnel only seven were locals.

The SP who himself is a Ph.D degree holder in genetics and plant breeding from Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi  said the Police Department has more qualified people at present when compared to the past.
