Mangaluru : German research to study rise in malaria cases

Mangaluru, May 07, 2015:   Minister U T Khader said that a German team will undertake research on prevalence of malaria in the region and submit a report within six months. The research, which will be conducted at Wenlock District Hospital, is expected to throw light on reasons for increase in malaria cases in the city. 


malaria cases.jA team from the Institute of Topical Medicine and International Health, Berlin, Germany, will start research in 15 days to study the causes for increase in malaria cases in the city.Prof Frank P Mockenhaupt, deputy director of research group, malaria & infectious diseases epidemiology department of the Institute will head the research team. He will be assisted by research scholar Prabhanjan Gai and Konrad Seigert, a medical student.

Prof Mockenhaupt, who has about 15 years of experience in this field and has conducted similar research in Africa.  said that the research is all about risk parameters of malaria. " The research eventually will aim at reducing the loads of malaria. We are trying to find out if there is some particular genetic factor, which makes people susceptible to malaria,"
