Mangaluru: Four arrested for weapons supply at Mangaluru jail

Mangaluru, Nov 17, 2015: Briefing media on Nov 16,  City Police Commissioner S Murugan said  the city police have arrested four persons in connection with the supply of weapons inside the Mangaluru jail.  The weapons were allegedly used for the murder of undertrial Madoor Yusuf inside the prison on November 2.

The arrested are Mahesh Kumar (35), Lathish (23), Sathish Acharya (42) and Kamalaksha Poojary (42). Mahesh and Lathish had come near the prison wall in a two-wheeler on October 31. Later, Mahesh threw the weapons inside the prison. The weapons - dagger and knives - were manufactured by Sathish Acharya and was handed over to Kamalaksha Poojary, who in turn, handed over to Mahesh to be supplied in the prison.

The police have filed two separate cases in connection with the murder of Yusuf and his associate Ganesh Shetty inside the Mangaluru jail premises on November 2.

The police have already arrested five persons Lithesh, Shobharaj, Yuvaraj, Pradeep and Umesh Kumbar in connection with the case. Further investigation is on police officials said.

Two arrested Nov 14 : Two persons have been arrested for possessing weapons and moving suspiciously, violating laws under Section 144, in Mangaluru North police station limits on Nov 14.  The arrested are M Arif (29) and Ahmmed Shravan (23). The accused allegedly thrown an iron rod at the police personnel when  the latter tried to stop them.

Talking to media on Nov 16,Monday,  Police Commissioner S. Murugan  informed that, orders prohibiting the movement of people in groups will be in place in Surathkal and Ullal police station limits from 6 p.m. of November 16 to 6 a.m. of November 22. In other areas of the city, the police might restrict the movement of people and also close down shops at sun set, if necessary.

Commissioner  Murugan said that except for an incident of stone pelting in Surthakal, there has not been any untoward incident in the city. He said that personnel from the Rapid Action Force (RAF), the Karnataka State Reserve Police and other police personnel have been deployed in good numbers in Surathkal and Ullal.

While the police were taking action against mischief mongers, he sought the help of people in finding persons who are getting involved in assaults and pelting of stones. It was impossible for police to guard every house and individual. He sought the cooperation of people in maintaining peace in the region. People should also prevent actions that disturb peace, he said.  There were no untoward incidents in the district. The RAF and other police personnel carried out a flag march in Surathkal.

The Mangaluru North police have arrested two persons of a group of eight that threw an iron rod that allegedly hit a police constable in J.M. Road.  According to media information, a team of policemen on patrol saw eight people with machetes and heavy sticks standing near a hotel.

When the police went to apprehend them, they ran away and one among them threw an iron rod. The rod hit the leg of a constable. The police gave the names of the two accused as M. Arif (29) and Mohammed Shravan (23).
