Mangaluru: Extension of vented dam - land to be acquired

Mangaluru, July 14, 2015: Chairing a review meeting on the development works in Mangalore City Corporation July 13, DK DC  Adoor B Ibrahim directed officials to initiate measures to acquire 276.82 acre land for increasing the height of the new vented dam at Thumbay from four metre to seven metre. The new vented dam aims to supply drinking water to the Mangalore City Corporation.  He said work on the new vented dam has been entrusted to Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board.

B IbrahimMCC acting Commissioner Gokuldas Nayak said a sum of Rs 21.97 crore has already been paid to the board. A revised estimate of Rs 75.50 crore has been prepared for the vented dam.  The commissioner said a proposal for the second phase of ADB project is before the government. As the UGD Under ground drainage, in Old Municipal area is superflous , there is a need to replace with new UGD facilities. There has been leakage and overflow of sewerage at several locations

At the same time, UGD storm water drain is common feature in old municipal area. Hence, there is a need to take up the work on the UGD in old municipal area.

The State government has entrusted the responsibility of survey and study on the UGD phase II to G K W consultants of Kolkatta. The survey includes 100-km of UGD extension work which were not included in the KUDCEP project of Rs 218 crore in the first phase of ADB project.

The commissioner said Rs 100 crore released under chief minister’s special grant, a total of 110 works have been taken up, of which 82 works are complete. Nine works worth Rs 1,875 lakh are in progress. About 15 works worth Rs 4,425 lakh is in tender stage. In the third phase of 100 crore under Chief Minister’s special grant, 168 works have been taken up. A total of 44 works are in progress. Tender has to be invited for 11 works worth Rs 1,785 lakh.
