Mangaluru, Oct 31, 2015 : Following court orders, the DK District Administration took steps to destroy 18.17 kg of ganja which was seized between 2008 and 2011 in the district in connection with different cases. The court order came as all cases pertaining to the seizing of ganja during the period were disposed off. On Friday several bundles of ganja were burnt near the DC office in the presence of several officials including Deputy Commissioner A.B Ibrahim.
The DC who spoke to reporters later said the burnt ganja was worth Rs 5 lakhs. Expressing his concern over the rising drug abuse in the society particularly among students, he said the administration would make all out efforts to end the menace. A special squad has also been formed, he said.
He said the administration has information that ganja was transported in trains via the Hyderabad-Chennai-Mangaluru and Hyderabad-Panjim-Mangaluru routes. He also added that steps would be taken to prevent smuggling of ganja.
LA Manjunath, Deputy Commissioner of Excise of DK District, said the Department was leaving no stone unturned in tackling drugs cases and also in preventing drugs peddling. He also gave information about the several raids conducted in different parts of the district.
