Mangaluru: DCP Shantharaju inaugurates Indo-Swedish workshop at Nitte Institute

Mangaluru, Dec 09, 2016: Deputy Commissioner of Police Dr KM Shantharaju inaugurated Indo-Swedish workshop on "Human health and wellbeing at risk, microbial blooms, climate change and urbanisation in Mangalore" at Nitte University College campus in Pumpwell on December 9, Friday.

 

Addressing the gathering Shantharaju recalled the incident at Ullal where close to hundred people fell ill due to consumption of fish which is identified as Red Snapper (local name Chemberi). It is necessary to know about the facts and symptoms that come along with food poisoning, he said and stressed the need to enlighten the masses in this regard.  Nitte University has taken up positive initiative to conduct research on such issues which needs to be appreciated, he added.

He also said that  urbanization can bring positive changes in the society.

Nitte team has been actively collaborating with University of Gothenburg in Sweden over the last two decades on climate change induced harmful microbial blooms along the Indian west coast. More specifically they have accessed potential impacts on consumers and producers of marine products in light of changing climate and socio economic conditions. The workshop familiarized the participants on impact of climate change such as sea water temperature, salinity on the occurrence of microbial blooms and their socio economic impact.

Dr Indrani Karunasagar, Director of Reserch and Development, Dr MS Moodithaya, Registrar of Nitte University and others were present.
