Mangaluru: Contractors, engineers must answer for bad roads

Mangaluru, Aug 06, 2015: Chairing the quarterly KDP meeting of Taluk-level departments at the Taluk Panchayat Hall in Mangaluru, Minister for Youth Empowerment, Sports and Fisheries K Abhayachandra Jain said that contractors and engineers will be held responsible for road and drain works under Namma Grama Namma Rasthe scheme, if the work is not carried out properly.

K Abhayachandr..Taluk Panchayat member Ishwar Kateel said that works carried out under the scheme were not satisfactory as new roads had worn out. The drain works are yet to be carried out, he said.   Responding, the minister directed the officials to strictly instruct the contractors to carry out the works properly and if the work was poor, the contractors and the engineers would be held responsible.   The minister meanwhile directed the assistance executive engineer to focus on completion of roads works under Suvarna Grama Yojana.

TP member Prakash said that many beneficiaries under Ganga Kalyana scheme were left in peril in Kandavara Gram Panchayat in Kaikamba as Mescom had not provided electricity connections, since one year. The scheme provides water connection for irrigation purpose.   The Mescom official said that the rule that electricity connection cannot be given within a distance of 500 metres from public water connections, had prevented the department from giving electricity connections.  Prakash clarified that respective gram panchayat had given a No Objection Certificate in this connection. But, the Mescom had failed to provide the connections.

Jain directed the Mescom officials to provide connections, as it was the question of the right of the beneficiaries. Also, a resolution should be passed by the TP in this regard, he said.

Member Sunitha Sucharitha Shetty alleged that five-year-old demand for a building for Raitha Samparka Kendra in Moodbidri, had not been met. The 25 cents land which was reserved in Puttige for the purpose earlier was utilised for the construction of judge’s quarters. The Kendra is temporarily functioning in a rented building where water leaks from the roof and the grains stored are getting spoiled.

Jain directed the concerned to pass a resolution towards earmarking of sufficient land in the Taluk Panchayat for the construction of the building.  

Taluk Backward Classes Extension Officer said that vacancy in main posts in the department had adversely affected distribution of pre-metric and post-metric scholarships.

Taluk child development project officer said that a proposal had been submitted to the Taluk Panchayat for repair of 51 anganwadi buildings in the taluk, at a budget of Rs 28.30 lakh.

Forest department social forest officer said that saplings had been planted on the roadsides at Beluvai, Aliyuru, Daregudde and Anegudde. The saplings have been planted on a stretch of 1.5 km. Also, saplings have been distributed at Thumbe nursery, by the department.   Taluk Panchayat President Rajani and Executive Officer Rajanna were present.
