Called as the Regional Level Pollution Response Exercise this was a full scale exercise for evaluating the capabilities and response mechanism of NMPT, MRPL and IOCL and augmenting regional level emergency preparedness with regard to risk factors associated with marine pollution.  The exercise was performed on a simulated oil spill at sea off Karnataka Coast.

One offshore patrol vessel (OPV), two fast patrol vessels (FPVs), one Dornier fixed wing aircraft and one helicopter of Indian Coast Guard along with tugs and barges belonging to NMPT participated in various manoeuvres and procedures as part of the exercise.

The operation gains significance in view of the increasing movement of oil and petro products in the region due to the presence of MRPL oil refinery and other petrochem industries.  Preservation and protection of marine ecology and environment including pollution control is one of the basic duties of Indian Coast Guard.

Meanwhile in the wake of rough seas, Indian Coast Guard has issued advisory to recall fishing boats from sea. It has tasked ships and aircraft to warn and shepherd fishing boats to safety, says a media communiqué from S.S. Dasila, Commander of Coast Guard, Karnataka.
