Mangaluru: Chicken prices rise but supply adequate

Mangaluru, June 10, 2015: With an excuse that  heat wave that killed more than 17 million birds recently,   chicken breeders,  taking the lead from their counterparts across the country-have increased the landing price of live birds to Rs 105 per kilogram.

Live broiler chicken is being sold at Rs 120 to Rs 135 per kg.  Chicken is selling at Rs 125 per kg. In the past two months, the live bird landing cost was between Rs 80 to Rs 89 per kg. There are four large breeders and plenty of small ones in DK and Udupi, enough to meet the demand, the price has been hiked simply because of the trend somewhere, according to  a retailer. 

Retailers have been facing hard times since they under estimated obligations to supply poultry meat to hotels and restaurants. The retailer noted that cartelization has led to this phenomenon with breeders taking the minimum of the prevailing price to determine rates here though the production cost is the same and has not seen an increase over the years.

Local farmers are working on the rates from  rest of the markets. When prices go up, they hike. Price stabilisation will come only when monsoon start. Hopefully we will have seen the worst with the matter cooling down.
