Late Friday night, the owners of the stolen cows in Thornoor village had complained about the theft to the Kushalnagar police who relayed the message to the Kodlipet police. But the driver and seven people in the Tempo Traveller eluded the barricades, hit a motorcyclist and fled towards Sakleshpur.

Policemen from Kushalnagar continued to chase the Tempo. A pick-up truck accompanying the van tried to block the police vehicle but the police party managed to intercept the Tempo at Aanemahal in the Sakleshpur rural police limits at 3 am.

However, five of the people in the van escaped after a scuffle with the police. Two men, identified as Sharif and Mansoor, have been arrested.

The pick-up truck was stopped and police took both vehicles into custody and parked them near the Kodlipet police station.

Kodagu superintendent of police Rajendra Prasad said efforts are on to nab the fugitives and police in Hassan and Mangaluru had been notified about the incident. The driver of the pick-up van who tried to obstruct the policemen is also at large.

Investigations are also on to nab the persons who torched the vehicle
