Mangaluru : Beedi workers stage massive protest against Union, State Govt policies

Mangaluru, July 23, 2015 : The Dakshina Kannada Beedi Workers Federation affiliated to the CITU which has strongly deplored the policies of the Union and State Governments, staged a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office on July 23, Thursday . Prior to the protest meet,  the protesters took out a procession from the Town Hall upto the protest venue.

Lokayya Shetty, CPI(M) leader who   addressed the protestors strongly criticised the BJP government at the Centre  for  inviting online applications  for scholarhips   to students while many poor people do not have any knowledge about internet. “Moreover, a sum of Rs 150  has to be paid while applying online for a scholarship amount of Rs 350,” he said.

Alleging that the Union government was run by RSS he questioned when the Acche Din promised by the government will be a reality.

He also dubbed the BJP and the Congress as two sides of the same coin and alleged that the two governments have failed to do justice to the poor.

Vasanth Achari, CPI(M) leader blamed the  defective policies of the government for the soaring prices of essential commodities. He said the beedi contractors have not paid the Dearness Allowance of Rs 12.75 per thousand rolled beedies from April.

Hundreds of beedi workers including several CITU leaders participated in the protest.
