Mangaluru: Army men fly past Mangaluru skies

Mangaluru, Nov 18, 2015: Taking off from the ground in the central part of the city was indeed challenging. While one hang glider managed to take off, the other failed to get the necessary elevation and abandoned his flight.

Personnel from the Indian Army’s Sky Conquerors team of Army Aero Nodal Centre gave a feel of hang gliding to those who had come to Nehru Maidan to play cricket and football.

 

The 11-member Sky Conquerors team led by Col. R.K. Mishra is on a 1,450-km-long expedition from Pollachi to Artillery Centre in Nasik to commemorate the reunion of Indian Army’s 13th Regiment. With this expedition the Indian Army wants to infuse the spirit of adventure among the armed forces and also attract youngsters to the services.

The team members came by road from Pollachi to Kannur from where a few of them took off on Tuesday morning to land at Mangaluru.

On Wednesday morning Naik A. Selvam took off from Nehru Maidan. Naik Sanjeev Kumar also took off but had to abandon the flight as he could not gain much height. Deputy Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim flagged off the expedition from Nehru Maidan.

From the Maidan, the Army gliders will be flying along the West Coast and land at Kumta. From there they will be flying to South Goa, Belgavi, Kolhapur, Satara and Dehu Road. The expedition will reach Artillery Centre in Nasik on November 25.
