Mangaluru, Feb 04, 2019: Chetan, 22, a B. Com first year student in a city college, does not just deliver food as an employee of an app-based delivery service provider; but also delivers a positive message to society when he rides a bicycle for his part-time job.

Even customers are surprised to see that he rides a bicycle instead of a scooter or a motorcycle. At a time when other delivery boys zoom past on motorcycles in a hurry, sometimes disregarding traffic rules, Mr. Chetan rides his bicycle with complete calm.

From Hirekumblagunte village in Kudligi Taluk of Ballari District, Mr. Chetan has spent only six months in Mangaluru after joining Maps College for graduation. “I had to discontinue studies for a few years after SSLC due to financial constraints,” he told The Hindu, and added that after completing PUC, his elder brother, who stays in Honnakatte near Surathkal, urged him to come to Mangaluru for further studies.

His father was able to foot his college fees and paying guest accommodation charges. But he needed money for other academic expenses and was looking for a part-time job. “I didn’t want to do some stereotypical work; I wanted a part-time job with flexibility,” he says.

“I thought of becoming a delivery boy for Swiggy after seeing an advertisement online but I neither had a driving license nor a bike,” Mr. Chetan said. When he expressed the inability at the Swiggy office, they encouraged him to use a bicycle.” “I’m using a bicycle borrowed from a friend,” he said.

Thus began his bicycle journey to deliver food parcels. He rides within a periphery of about 5 km around Lal Bagh to deliver food. He logs into work after 6 p.m. and continues till 10.30 p.m. completing five-six deliveries and earning around ₹150 in an evening.

Mangalore Bicycle Club General Secretary Ganesh Nayak, who spotted Mr. Chetan, told The Hindu that he had passively been contributing to reducing pollution and promoting a healthier way of life.
