Mangaluru, Aug 15, 2015: The 69th Independence Day was celebrated with patriotic fervor at Nehru Maidan here on August 15, Saturday. DK District in-charge Minister B Ramanatha Rai hoisted the national tri-colour and later received the guard of honour from the teams of NCC, Scouts, Guides, Karnataka Police, Home Guards and Traffic Police which presented an attractive parade.
In his Independence Day address, Minister Rai outlined the various welfare schemes initiated by the state government in the best interests of the people. He elaborated on the Anna Bhagya scheme, Vidyasiri scheme and Maitri schemes of the government. Rai also stated that the DC office complex would come up on a 5.89 acre land at Alape-Padil at a cost of Rs 40 crore. On the Shiradi Ghat road, the minister stated that the tender for the second phase covering 11.77 km is underway while a 13 km stretch of the road has been concretized in the first phase at a cost of Rs 69 crore.
The Minister also informed that a total of 45,593 applications have been received in the district by the Revenue Department under the Akrama Sakrama scheme. Of these 2498 applications have been cleared, he added.
Prominent among those present were S Murugan, City Police Commissioner, Dr Sharanappa, SP, Sreevidya, Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer, Jacintha Vijay Alfred, city Mayor, Purushottam, Deputy Mayor, Moidin Bava, JR Lobo, MLAs and Ivan D’Souza, MLC.
