Mangaluru : 27th National Road Safety Week inaugurated

Mangaluru, Jan 13, 2016 : The traffic problem confronting the city can be solved to a great extent if each and every citizen opts to serve as a traffic warden at least for an hour every week, observed JR Lobo, MLA of Mangaluru South.
He was speaking as a chief guest at the inaugural function of the 27th National Road Safety Week at Police Bhavan on January 12, Tuesday. Earlier a colourful procession which was taken out from Light House Hill to the function venue, was flagged off by DK District in-charge Minister B Ramanath Rai. Students of various colleges, NCC cadets and Scouts and Guides participated in the procession holding placards on road safety. The new rule of mandatory helmets even for pillion riders came into effect on the occasion of the inaugural of Road Safety Week.
G.S. Hegde, Assistant Regional Transport Officer, who delivered the key-note address said those violating traffic rules, jumping signals, those resorting to drunken driving and transporting people on goods lorries as also those speaking on mobile phones while driving will face suspension of Driving Licences for three months.
A week long training is planned for drivers who approach RTO for renewal of licences. The aim of this programme is to enlighten them on traffic rules, he added.
Dr. S.D. Sharanappa, District Superintendent of Police who also spoke, said every motorist has to ensure his safety while driving and try to avert accidents. Referring to some complaints of rude behaviour by private bus drivers and conductors, he requested the Bus Operators Association to train the bus crew in soft skills.
Awareness pamphlets and a booklet on traffic awareness were released by Jayaram Bhat, MD of Karnataka Bank and JR Lobo, MLA respectively on the occasion. The awareness calendar was released by Shantharaju and Dr Sandeep Patil, DCPs.
Joe Gonsalves, Senior Traffic Warden, K M Narayan, Vice President of Canara Bus Owners’ Association and many others were present.
