Mangaluru: 200 RAF personnel reach city

Mangaluru, Nov 16, 2015: Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel have arrived in Mangaluru city to assist the police in maintaining law and order even as prohibitory orders clamped on Dakshina Kannada ended late on Sunday. Barring an incident of stone-throwing at a city bus at Mogaveerapatna, near Ullal, the situation, though grim, was peaceful in the district.

 

According to the police, 200 RAF personnel (two companies) arrived on Sunday. They have been deployed at sensitive locations such as Ullal, where stray incidents of stabbing and stone-throwing have been reported in the past two days, and B.C. Road. These companies were in addition to 100 personnel of India Reserve Battalion, reserve police deployed in different locations. The RAF and the police conducted a flag march at Ullal on Sunday to infuse confidence among the people.

Deputy Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim said in a release that though prohibitory orders ended on Sunday no public meeting, protest, march, bandh and road blocks would be allowed in the district till November 20. This is part of the efforts to bring back normality. Mr. Ibrahim said that grants have been released for installation of closed circuit television cameras at vintage locations in the district. Revenue officials were coordinating with the police in maintaining law and order.

He said that of the six persons injured in the assaults in the district on Friday and Saturday and admitted to various hospitals, one was discharged. The district administration would bear the cost of their treatment.
