Mangalore varsity sets up study chair in Konkani

Mangaluru, June 12, 2015: Mangalore University has set up a study chair in Konkani language. Minister for Higher Education and Tourism R V Deshpande inaugurated the chair in the presence of various dignitaries here on Friday June 12 at Ravindra Kala Bhavan University College, Mangaluru.

Speaking after the inauguration, Mr Deshpande said that Konkani language, which was over a thousand years old, had a rich culture and tradition. Hence, research on the language is essential to gain more from Konkani and its culture. Works written in Konkani should be translated into English and other widely-used languages to facilitate the growth of the language and its culture, he said.

Mangalore University vice-chancellor, K Byrappa in his presidential address said "We are going to appoint two full time research scholars for the Konkani Study Chair. So far we have 16 Study Chairs and none of them are working properly. Keeping this in mind we will concentrate on all the study chairs. A special study has to be made on Konkani. Konkani Study chair is not meant only for the arts section, it is for all of us as well," he said.

Speaking on the occasion, PS Yadapadithaya, Registrar of Mangalore University, said that this is the 16th study chair of the university. The study chair in Konkani will take up research in history and development of the language. It will also study and document the culture and literature in the language. Steps will be taken to provide online diploma and distance education courses in Konkani language, he said.

Bishop of Mangaluru Dr Aloysius Paul D’souza, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, MLC Ivan D’souza, Mangaluru South MLA J R Lobo, Basti Vaman Shenoy, Eric Ozario and others were also present on this occasion.
