Mangalore University study centre to bring out Yakshagana plays in 30 volumes

Mangalore, Sep 09, 2014:  Delivering his presidential address at the valedictory of fifth anniversary celebrations of Yaksharadhana Kala Kendra at Town Hall in Mangalore on Sept 7, Mangalore University Yakshagana Study Centre Director Prof K Chinnappa Gowda has said that the centre will bring out volumes on Yakshagana plays every year.

Prof Chinnappa  also added  that the Yakshagana Study Centre of the university, as a part of its publications, has decided to bring out the volumes of Yakshagana plays. Volumes containing two Yakshagana plays, will be published every year. Totally 30 plays will be published, he said.

Prof Gowda further said that the active participation of women in Yakshagana, has given a motherly touch to the art these days. In a nutshell, Yakshagana art is thriving,  he added.

Yakshagana artiste Bottikere Purushottam Poonja said that Yakshagana is a worshipping art and experiments within the framework of the art, will be complimentary in developing the art from. In order to produce good Yakshagana artistes there is a need for good direction, he said and added that the learners of the art should has quest for knowledge and should try to know the intricacies of the art by clearing their doubts from experts. There are several doubts in the art form and none tried to analyse them, he added.

Yakshagana artsite Kubanoor Shridhar Rao said that the role of amateur Yakshagana troupes is significant. Kateelu Yakshagana mela artistes Bhagavath Bottikere Purushottama Poonja and Pundu Veshadhari Shashidhar Kulal were conferred ‘Yakshakalaradhaka’ and ‘Yuva Yaksha Kalaradhaka’ awards respectively on the occasion.  ‘Poorvaranga Nrithya Vaibhava’ was presented.

Yaksharadhana Kala Kendra Managing Trustee Sumangala Rathnakar, Kannada Sahitya Parishat former President Harikrishna Punaroor, Karnataka Bank AGM H PR Hande among others were present.
