The podium finish by Ranjeeth Kumar Patel of the host Mangalore  university, whose timing of 38:54.95 fetched him the gold. What made Ranjeeth’s achievement unique is the fact that he became the first athlete from any university in south India to bag the gold medal in this event, for runners from north India have clearly dominated long distance running events including the cross-country races ever since Association of Indian Universities started this event.

Total team points - 15 - secured by men’s team of the hosts themselves is also an all-time record of least points netted by winning team in history of the meet. While Ranjeeth finished first, team mate Abhishek Pal finished third, Rajkumar Singh, fifth, and Siju CP sixth making up for 15 points of the team. MD University, Rohtak that finished second netted 137 points, Punjab University, Patiala 154 points to take home the bronze and University of Delhi finished fourth with 340 points.

On the distaff side, Punjab University stood first with 38 points, hosts finished second with 49 points, Calicut Univeristy, Calicut, third with 57 points and Savitribai Phule Univeristy, Pune, fourth with 81 points. Placings of top four runners of each team determines total points that a university gets and one with least score is adjudged champion. AIU will select teams from among the toppers to represent India in the World University Games in Italy in March 2016.
