Mangaluru, July 2, 2015 : The Directorate of Correspondence Courses at the Mangalore University has invited applications to introduce certificate and diploma courses in the Tulu language under the correspondence mode from the current academic year.
The certificate course will be of six months duration and diploma will be of one-month duration. The last date to apply without fine is July 31 and with a fine of Rs. 500 is August 18.
More than three years after the Governor approved the proposal to introduce Tulu courses, Mangalore University finally a step is seen.
The Governor, who is the Chancellor of universities, approved the regulations governing certificate, diploma and postgraduate diploma courses in Tulu under correspondence mode, on January 13, 2012.
The academic council approved the syllabus of certificate and diploma courses at a meeting on July 2, 2012. The university issued a notification on July 21, 2012, for implementing these courses from the academic year 2012-13. But they remained a non-starter.
Sources in the university stated it was mainly due to a delay in preparing study material. One of the members in the panel of experts took long to prepare the study material of the subject assigned to him. According to a document of Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy, Tulu has a history of more than 2,600 years and its literature dates back to the 14th century.
About 10 million claim Tulu as their mother tongue and Tulu has its own script. It is being taught from Class 6 to Class 10.
According to the regulations of the course, those who have passed SSLC could apply for the certificate course. It will cover basic knowledge of Tulu and communication. The certificate course covered 300 marks with two papers of 100 marks each and 100 marks for viva.
Those who have passed PU could apply for the diploma course.
The course is for 500 marks which would include Tulu literature, folklore and culture, and communication.
According to the president of the academy, M. Janaki Brahmavar, introduction of the courses could help have Tulu teachers in schools.
