The workers staged a protest under the aegis of Dalit organisations, in front of the University administrative block, urging the payment of the salary dues and other facilities. They also demanded Provident Fund and ESI facilities. They said that the outsourcing agency had not paid their salary the last two months.

On June 6, Tuesday, the protesters urged Vice Chancellor Prof K Byrappa to come to the spot. Accordingly, the vice chancellor spoke to the protesters and assured them that measures would be taken to provide them salary from the University itself. Prof Byrappa said that he had discussed the matter with the Higher Education Minister Basavaraj Rayareddy.

Leaders Ashok Konchadi, Raghuvir, Padmavati Shetty and others urged the vice chancellor to initiate action against the outsourcing agency, for denying facilities to the workers and flouting rules. The contract made by the university with the agency should be cancelled by blacklisting the company, they insisted.

Labour Department joint commissioner Nagaraj and district officer Mailarappa, who were present on the occasion, said that if the salaries of the workers are not paid June 8, the Department will lodge a case against the company.

CPI(M) Ullal zonal secretary Krishnappa Salian, BJP leader Santhosh Rai, state executive committee member K Ravindra Shetty Ulidottu and Konaje Gram Panchayat president Shoukat Ali were present.
