Mangalore University approves PG course in Tulu

Mangaluru, Jun 22, 2018 : The Academic Council of Mangalore University accorded approval for the regulations governing Master of Arts (MA) in Tulu.

Mangalore University Acting VC Prof Kishore Kumar C K said the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy has mooted a proposal to start MA Tulu, Tulu as an optional subject/language for undergraduate courses. Accordingly, regulations governing the Master of Arts In Tulu (annual scheme) was approved. The Syndicate of the University has approved the same.

It has been proposed to start MA in Tulu at the University Evening College, Mangaluru.

Arts Faculty Dean Prof Kishori Nayak said that there is a need to conduct an entrance test and viva voce while admitting students to MA in Tulu. Those who have done Diploma in Tulu can be exempted from the entrance exam.

Dr Nagappa Gowda said those who have completed MA in Kannada with a specialisation in Tulu are eligible for a teaching job for MA in Tulu.

The regulation of the Master of Arts in Tulu said Tulu is one of the developed Dravidian language with a history of more than 2,600 years. It enables the students to develop sensitivity and insights into the rich cultural heritage of the region.

The postgraduation in Tulu also aims to encourage students to pursue research interest in Tulu language, literature and culture.

The university proposes to start MA in Tulu during the academic year and introduce Tulu as an optional subject in UG courses from 2019-20.

The Academic Council also approved to start Certificate, Diploma and Postgraduate Diploma courses in Tulu as regular programmes. The regulations on the courses will come into force from the date of assent of the Chancellor.

Candidates who have passed SSLC examination are eligible for Certificate Course in Tulu, candidates who have passed two years of PUC examinations are eligible for Diploma in Tulu while those who have passed any three years bachelor degree are eligible for PG Diploma in Tulu.

New courses :  Acting Vice Chancellor Prof Kishore Kumar said that MA in History and Archaeology will be started at the University College in Mangaluru from the academic year 2018-19. The Academic Council approved the syllabus for the first and second semester.

St Aloysius College, Mangaluru, proposed to introduce MSc in Food Science, Nutrition, Dietetics, MSc in Big Data Analytics and MCom (Finance Analytics) during the academic year. The Academic Council approved the amendment to regulations governing the choice -based credit system for the two year PG programme under Arts, Science, Commerce and Education discipline of the college.

Proposal to start LLM  :  Prof Kishore Kumar said that the university proposes to start Master of Law (LLM) degree programme. The duration of the programme is one academic year.

The regulation will be sent to the Chancellor for approval. In addition, the university has proposed to start School of Law at the University College in Mangaluru. The draft statute governing the establishment of faculty of law with Department of Advanced Legal Studies and Research, School of Law, was approved in the Academic Council. The statute will be sent to the government for Chancellor’s assent.
