Mangalore University academic council approves affiliation to 11 new colleges

Mangaluru, March 25, 2018: The academic council of Mangalore University at its fourth general meeting for the academic year 2017-18, approved new affiliation requests submitted by 11 colleges. While seven of these colleges will offer BCom courses, two colleges will offer bachelors degrees in audiology and speech language pathology (BASLP) and one college each in bachelor of visual arts (BVA) and BSc in hospitality sciences (BSc-HS). Each course has a different intake.

An official note by the university with the affiliation agenda that the council debated, states that the university has 205 affiliated colleges. Out of this, 37 are government colleges, 14 are BEd, BPEd colleges, five autonomous colleges, and four constituent colleges. While 13 colleges enjoy permanent affiliation, 14 did not apply for renewal of affiliation for 2018-19. Requests submitted by four colleges for permanent affiliation during 2018-19 were not accepted.

VC K Byrappa, who chaired the meeting, directed the university officials to ensure that colleges strictly follow conditions laid down by the local inquiry committees (LIC) and issue notices to institutions not following them. When LIC chairmen and members pointed out that some colleges do not have laboratories to offer courses sought by them, Byrappa said colleges should be given appropriate time to ensure that laboratories are in place within the stipulated deadline.

Govt colleges to get lab equipment, computers
Mangalore University Vice Chancellor Prof K Byrappa said on march 24, Saturday that the university would take steps to better equip the laboratories at government first grade colleges coming under its jurisdiction.

Speaking at the academic council meeting here, he said that the old instruments and lab equipment from various science departments, including computers, would be given to the government first grade colleges to strengthen their laboratories. After five years, the computers become obsolete. Instead, such computers and other equipment could be used in the government first grade colleges. Further, lecturers and professors from Mangalore University can be asked to provide special lectures in the government colleges as well, he said.

The VC directed the Joint Director of Collegiate education to start BSc course in Government First Grade College at Mudipu as the university can help in setting up the laboratory.

There are 205 colleges affiliated to Mangalore University, of which 37 are government colleges, 14 are BEd/BPEd colleges, 5 autonomous colleges, 4 constituent colleges. As many as 14 colleges have not applied for renewal of affiliation for the year 2018-19. As many as 11 colleges had applied for new affiliation.

New affiliation
The Academic council of the Mangalore University granted new affiliation to A J Institute of Speech and Hearing, Kuntikana (BASLP), Mahalasa School of Arts (BVA), Nethaji College of Speech and Hearing (BASLP), Trusha Evening College (BCom), Vikas First Grade College (BCom), Trusha Vidya Evening College (BCom), Trusha Vidya College of Commerce (BCom), Meredian College of Hotel Management, Kundapura (BSc Hospitality Science), Mookambika First Grade College, Byndoor (BCom), Kannada Bharathi First Grade College, Kushalnagar (BCom) and Shamsul Ulama First Grade College, Virajpet (BCom).

Delink from Hampi varsity
Byrappa asked the authorities to write to Mahalasa School of Arts to delink from the affiliation of Hampi Kannada University. The fresh batch of the Mahalasa School of Arts will be affiliated to Mangalore University.

The Local Inquiry Committee (LIC) on the grant of renewal of affiliation to St Raymonds College, Vamanjoor had said that students should be told to maintain discipline in the classroom and college. To this, the VC directed the authorities concerned to issue a notice to the college and take an undertaking from it, of following the direction.

The LIC, which visited Mar Ivanios College of Education, Puttur, noted that the principal of the college was not present during the present as well as the previous visit of the LIC. The LIC, which also visited the Government First Grade College, Vamadapadavu, had not recommended for granting fresh affiliation to MA in Economics, MSW and MA in Kannada courses. Further, it has not recommended for the renewal of affiliation for BSc as no admission was done last year. The LIC has not recommended for starting BSc (food technology) at Udupi Institute of Hotel and Tourism Sciences, Manipal. The LIC has not recommended for starting MSc (Chemistry) at the Dr G Shankar Government Women’s First Grade College and PG Study Centre, Ajjarakadu.
