Mangalore, Feb 24, 2014 : Nearly 30 out of the 280 prisoners lodged at the District Prison in Mangalore, enjoyed participating in a chess tournament on February 23, Sunday.
It was the first time that such a tournament was organised for under trials and the credit must go to the United Karnataka Chess Association and the jail authorities.
The chess players donning a cap and wearing white T-shirts actively participated in the tournament.
N.S. Patil, Chief Judicial Magistrate, who was present as a chief guest said prisoners should not be alienated as they are part and parcel of the society.
PS Ramesh, Superintendent of the District Prison said such tournaments contribute to reformation of prisoners.
Ravi, Mahesh and Gopal bagged the first three prizes, while Suryakumar and Hamza bagged consolation prices.
