Mangalore – Mumbai bus topples in a bridge, 7 dead falling into river

Mangalore/Mumbai Oct 15, 2011 : Seven passengers died after a private bus bound to Mumbai from Mangalore met with an accident on a bridge, 12kms from Ankola on Oct 14 Friday at 10:15 p.m.

 

The bus had left Mangalore at 1:00 p.m. and was proceeding to Mumbai through the Moodubidri – Karkala route. The accident took place along NH63 on Ankola – Yellapur Road.

The cause is not yet known, but it is widely held that the bus might have hit the protective wall of the bridge. However, some sources reveal that a lorry hit the bus.

Thirty-seven people were on board this bus. Of them, 4 died on the spot and 3 died on the way to the hospital. Some of those who fell into the river swam to safety and managed to call the police and the ambulance. The local people also rescued many of them.

But many have been injured, and at least 5 of them are in serious condition. The injured are taking treatment at Hubli and Yellapur hospitals.

The names of the injured and the deceased are not yet available.
