Man who harassed Mangalurean job aspirant in Bengaluru is son of former Jammu and Kashmir minister

Bengaluru, June 4, 2017: The 26-year-old accused from Kashmir, who had posed as an HR to sexually abuse a job aspirant at an MNC bank, was arrested by the MICO Layout police. The accused is a serial offender and has harassed nearly 200 women in the last two years using a SIM with UP registration. He was caught only after the 25-year-old from Mangaluru filed a complaint against him.

abid ganiThe accused has been identified as Abid Gani (in pic), a resident of Puttenahalli in JP Nagar. He is presently working for a BPO firm in Whitefield. On May 15th, he had sexually harassed the 25-year-old victim after she had come to attend an interview at an MNC bank on BG Road. He told the victim that she had failed in the interview and he would help her. Believing the caller, the victim went outside the bank to meet him, where he sexually harassed her. The victim, who had managed to escape, filed a complaint with the police. The police tracked his movements and arrested him on Wednesday

After investigating further into the case, the police realised that this isn’t an isolated case. The accused had molested over 200 women in the city.

An officer who is investigating the case, said, “We obtained the call details and found that he had called some 200 women in the city. We spoke to the women and got to know about the harassment.”

“The accused confessed to the crime and said that he managed to get the numbers of the women from job portals. He would then pose as the recruiter to harass them,” said an officer on part of the investigations.

Abid Gani, after his arrest, claimed that he is the son of a politician who is also an advocate. Rumours started making rounds on Friday that he is the son of one former Jammu and Kashmir minister Abdul Gani Vakil which is being verified,” MB Boralingaiah, deputy commissioner of police (South East) told BM. When BM tried to contact the former minister to know if he was aware of his son’s arrest by the Bengaluru police, both his phones had been switched off.

The MICO layout police have registered a case of sexual harassment (IPC 354A) against Gani and are further investigating.
