Man goes missing in river at Nada in Mangaluru

Udupi, Aug 15 2019: A man went missing and is feared to have accidentally fallen into the Souparnika at Nada village in Byndoor taluk, while 19 houses were damaged in rain accompanied by winds in Udupi district.

According to the police, Robert Banz (59), who was working as a temporary postman, had gone to deliver postal items at Kalavina Bagilu at Nada village, coming under the Gangolli Police limits, at around 8 a.m. But he did not return till 8.30 a.m. His friend, Walter Fernandes, became suspicious and launched a search for Banz.

Banz’s scooter was found near the Souparnika and his footwear was floating in the river water. Though Mr. Fernandes searched for him, Banz was not to be found. Hence, he lodged a complaint stating that Banz might have, while walking, lost his balance and accidentally fallen into the river. A missing case has been registered, the police said.

Soon after getting information about the incident, the staff of Fire and Emergency Services rushed to the spot at Nada village. The Fire and Emergency Services staff launched a search in the river, while expert divers were pressed into service.

The search operations, which began at around 9.30 a.m., were called off at around 6.30 p.m. as it became dark. They would be resumed on Thursday.

Deputy Commissioner Hephsiba Rani Korlapati and Superintendent of Police Nisha James also visited the spot. According to the information provided by the District Control Room at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office here, 19 houses were damaged in rain in Kundapur taluk. Udupi received a rainfall of 89.7 mm in the last 24 hours ended at 8.30 a.m., while Kundapur and Karkala towns received a rainfall of 54.5 mm and 69.8 mm, respectively.
