Man arrested, charged with murder, throwing stones at mosque

Udupi, Feb 2, 2017: The Udupi district police on Feb 1,  Wednesday arrested an activist, allegedly belonging to a right wing organisation, on the charge of murdering an autorickshaw driver and throwing stones at a mosque here on January 29. 


arrest The police gave the name of the accused as Ankith, aged about 23. He was arrested near Nittur Junction here. Ankith had thrown stones at the Noorul Islam Mosque at Adiudupi after midnight on January 29. This resulted in glass panes of a couple of windows of the mosque getting damaged.

Riding on his motorcycle towards Karavali Junction, where he had an altercation with an autorickshaw driver Haneef and his relative Shabbir. In a fit of rage, Ankith stabbed Haneef and attacked Shabbir. Haneef, who was severely injured, later died on way to the hospital.

But Ankith’s action of throwing stones at the mosque was captured in the CCTV cameras installed there and this helped the police arrest him. The police said that Ankith, a resident of Vittla in Dakshina Kannada district, had confessed to them of committing both the crimes and also that he was drunk while committing them.

A case has been registered against him under Sections 302, 307, 447, 448, 153(A) and 295 of the IPC at Udupi Town Police Station.

He has three cases against him in Ullal and four cases against him in Mangaluru, the police said.
